WEEKEND RECAP – U11 SOO JUNIOR GREYHOUNDS
(Paul Wierzbicki – Soo Jr. Greyhounds TV)
Our U11 boys provided us with some exciting and well played hockey in the AAA division of the Playstation Platinum Cup in Etobicoke this past weekend.
Game one saw the Jr. Hounds take on the Lambton Jr. Sting and come away with a 4-2 victory to open the tournament. Brett Rossetto had two beauty goals displaying some great individual effort and perfect shots. Jayden Fisher-Ruck finished off a give and go with Matti Lappalainen after Jacob Wierzbicki found them with a 100ft stretch pass from his own end. Mason Pagnotta fired one home as well after a pass from Fisher-Ruck. Carter Rome made some big saves and recorded the win.
Game two the boys took on the eventual tournament winning Toronto Red Wings team less than 3 hours after the win in game one. This was a physical game that displayed some good team speed on both sides. In the end the Red Wings perhaps had some fresher legs and skated away with a 3-0 win.
Game three finished in a thrilling 2-2 tie against the Mississauga Senators. After being down 2-0 the Hounds battled back with a great individual effort goal from Wyatt Jarrett. With under a minute to play the Hounds pulled Rome from the net in favor of a sixth attacker. Ben Campbell skated the puck to center and dumped it into the Senators zone. With 40 seconds to play Jarrett and Lappalainen were able to send the puck out front to the wide open extra attacker Tommy Ubaldi who made no mistake and buried the goal.
The Quarter Final game saw the Hounds go up against a solid Toronto Young Nationals team. This was a hard fought back and forth game. After the Nats went up 2-0 a late second period breakaway goal by Lappalainen cut the lead in half. The Hounds would pull Ben Clayton with under a minute to go and send out a sixth skater. The Nats iced a puck that missed the open net by inches. Wierzbicki picked it up and moved it to Ben Campbell who sent it up to Fisher-Ruck. Jayden made a quick pass to Rossetto and with just 5 seconds remaining Brett found the back of the net to tie it up. In the overtime frame the Junior Hounds created a lot of pressure in the Young Nats zone but were not able to capitalize. This one went to a shoot out where the Young Nats were able to score the only shoot out goal and take the victory. Although the boys probably deserved a better fate in this one we were all proud of the effort they brought and enjoyed the exciting hockey they provided.
This weekend we travel to Toronto to take part in the Tyler Cragg Memorial Canadiens Cup AAA Tournament. First game goes Friday at 8:15am against the host team Toronto Jr. Canadiens.
