Made Our Mark in Southern Ontario
Our Phi Dental Care Soo Jr Greyhounds traveled to Newmarket this past weekend to show how they can compete with the best teams in the Silverstick International Championship tournament.
From the moment we arrived in Newmarket, we started turning heads. Thanks to Great Lakes Bus Tours, our Jr Hounds rolled up in style with the Team Canada U18 bus and continued by marching into the arena singing "Hound Power" with pride.
On the ice was no different. They continued to play their 2 way game throughout the tournament, playing against Newmarket (rated 10th AA), Gloucester White (rated 37th AAA) and Stratford (rated 2nd AA). The boys played an excellent team game but their speed and goaltending tandem was definitely their greatest assets. After day 2 of the tournament the Jr Hounds cliched a birth in to the Semi Finals with a 2-0-1 record.
Day three began with the final round robin game verses Gloucester Green (rated 25th AAA) and it seemed that the boys didn't bring their A game and suffered their first loss of the tournament.
It was time to rest up for the Semi Finals that evening against the 3rd overall rated team in Ontario, Orangeville Flyers. Organeville went undefeated in the round robin and after a 1 1/2 hour ice delay, the Semi Final was ready to go. Organeville came out flying and sustained a lot of pressure on our hounds and quickly lead 3-0 within the first 7 minutes of the game. With perseverance and determination, our Phi Dental Care Jr Greyhounds fought back and scored twice in the second period and a wrap around goal that was called back and disallowed ending the second period with the hounds down by one. They kept the pressure throughout the third but was unable to find the back of the net and with the extra attacker on the ice late in the game, the final buzzer went without our hounds finding the equalizer and their tournament was over. Orangeville Flyers went on and became the 2017 Silverstick Champions winning 1-0 verses York Toros.
The coaching staff could not have been any prouder of their team in the way they played and how they left everything they had on the ice. We now know that our hounds can play with the best of the best and looking forward, we are only going to get better. Everyone knows now what the 2007 Soo Jr Greyhounds are all about!
