NOHA Champions - Pee Wee Major '06 Sault Jr. Greyhounds
Submitted By Sault Major on Wednesday, March 6, 2019
The Pee Wee Major Soo Jr. Greyhounds 2006 group had a spectacular weekend in North Bay and have brought home the 2018-19 NOHA championship, qualifying themselves for the OHF Championships in Mississauga in April.

Backed by stellar defensive play, giving up only 6 goals in the 5 tournament games, the Sault boys went undefeated throughout the tournament and played their hearts out later Sunday afternoon to win the championship.

In Game one on Friday evening, the Soo faced off against the home town host, North Bay Trappers.  The Hounds went up 2-1 early in the third but North Bay evened the scoring on a power play goal late in the period.  The game ended up in a 2-2 tie.

Saturday morning had the Greyhounds line up against the Nickel City Sons, a team that the Soo had not lost to all season long.  The winning ways continued and in a spirited affair, the Sault boys walked away with a 3-2 victory.

The third and last game of the round robin had the Jr. Greyhounds play the Sudbury Wolves.  The Sault boys seemed to have found their groove in this match and disposed of the Wolves with a convincing 7-1 victory.

The stage was now set for the semi-finals on Sunday morning.  The Sault met up with the third place Nickel City Sons.  Backed by the stellar defensive play and goaltending, combined with timely scoring, the Sault shut out the Sons 5-0, setting the stage for the final against the home town North Bay Trappers.

The championship game was a gritty and hard-fought challenge for the Sault team.  Even though the Sault’s record in the Northern Ontario Nickel District league this year stood at 25-1-1 (League Champions), every game this weekend put the team to the test.

The game was scoreless after 2 periods of play, until halfway through the third stanza.  North Bay opened the scoring on a top shelf, over the shoulder laser.  Then the fortunes changed.  With approximately 1:10 left in the game and with the face off in the North Bay end, the Sault pulled their goalie for the extra attacker and tied the score within seconds of the draw, setting the stage for overtime!!  With the renewed momentum, it took just under two minutes for the Greyhounds to get the overtime winner and take home the NOHA championship and a berth at the OHF Playoff Championships in April!  Final: 2-1 Greyhounds over North Bay Trappers in OT.

Goaltending duties were handled by A.J. Borrelli and Grant Mathewson.

Defense duties were handled by:  Kiinen Saari, Christian Sartor, Gage Evans, Brayden Luzzi, Cameron Hernden and Kadin Johnston

The Forwards include: Lucas Green, Anthony Blonda, Dominic Cicco, Darion Pucci, Camden Cowan, Gabriel Palumbo, Cole Cond, Rowan Wyslocky and Wyatt Leblanc.

This is the second NOHA championship for this age group, having secured Gold in 2015-2016 as well.
