U11 Hounds Earn Spot in Quarters
WEEKEND RECAP – U11 SOO JUNIOR GREYHOUNDS
(Paul Wierzbicki – Soo Jr. Greyhounds TV)

The U11 Junior Greyhounds took part in the Canadiens Cup Tyler Cragg Memorial AAA Tournament this past weekend in Toronto. Overall the weekend featured some highs and lows but the boys worked hard and played some top notch competition.

Game one was an eye opening 12-1 loss to the top ranked AAA team in the province, the Toronto Jr. Canadiens. Wyatt Jarrett scored the lone Hounds goal in this one.

The Hounds were able to regroup and bounce back strong in the second game of the tournament against the Windsor Zone AAA club skating away with an impressive 9-2 win. Brett Rossetto put his skill on display in this one scoring 6 goals! Jayden Fisher-Ruck added 2 goals and showed some great two way play. Gavyn Nevers was skating hard and battling all game long and was rewarded with a tally of his own. Ben Clayton recorded the win.

Game three the Hounds took on a Toronto Reps AAA squad that came out fired up and ready to play. The Hounds found themselves down 5-0 after one period of play. They battled back in the final two periods but it was too little too late as they were defeated 6-3. Mason Pagnotta, Matti Lappalainen and Rossetto did the scoring for the hounds in this one.

Game 4 was perhaps the most exciting game of the tournament as the Hounds met up with the Montreal Royals. A win was needed by the Hounds in order to advance to the quarter finals. Jacob Wierzbicki opened the scoring before the Royals tied the game up at 1-1. With under 3 minutes to play Lappalainen sent a shot from the boards that somehow found its way to the back of the net to put the Hounds up 2-1. That’s the way this one ended and they secured a spot in the quarters. Ben Clayton was exceptional in this one making several key saves and putting in a solid performance.

In the Quarter final game the boys met up with the Toronto Titans. Jayden Fisher-Ruck opened the scoring to put the Junior Hounds up 1-0 but a strong push back in the final two periods by the Titans proved to be too much as the Hounds fell 6-1.

Overall it was another exciting weekend of AAA hockey and lessons learned from playing some top competition. The boys are back home in Sault Ste. Marie now for the next few weeks practicing and working hard on improving their game.
