U12AAA 2021-2022 Season
The 2021-2022 Season was an exciting season for the U12 AAA team.  This season was the return to traditional hockey with regular league games and tournaments.  This season was also the first season these enthusiastic players and coaches participated in AAA hockey.  The team rose to the challenge and had a successful season with all things considered.  The fall tryouts, late start to game play and mid year COVID lockdown created several challenges for the team but were all overcome by the end of the season.

The season started a little differently with September tryouts followed by the first traditional game play in year and half at the NOHLAAA Showcase in Sudbury, Ontario.  The team had mixed results at the Showcase with two wins against the North Bay Trappers (10-1) and the Nickel City Jr Sons (10-0), and one loss against the Sudbury Nickel Capitals (8-1).

League games start in October and the team was successful in winning all six games in October.  In the middle of October, the team participated in their first AAA tournament in Barrie, Ontario.  The Barrie tournament had several highly competitive teams that challenged the Jr Hounds.  The Jr Hounds qualified for the playoff in the tournament with three wins against Southern Tier Admirals (7-1), Chatham Kent Cyclones (6-1), and Eastern Ontario Cobras (7-0), and one loss against the Toronto Marlboros (4-2).  The Jr Hounds met the Waterloo Wolves in the quarterfinals and moved on to the semi-finals with a 6-0 victory.  In the semi-finals, the Jr Hound faced the Toronto Marlboros for the second time.  After the Jr Hounds tied the game in the third period, the Jr Hounds ended up on the wrong side of a double overtime goal by the Toronto Marlboros and the Jr Hounds lost 4-3.

The team participated in two of the most competitive tournaments in Ontario in November, the Shanahan International in Vaughan, Ontario and the AAA International Silver Stick Finals in Whitby, Ontario.  The Jr Hounds qualified for the playoffs in the Shanahan International with two wins over Ottawa Valley Silver Seven (4-1) and Brantford 99ers (4-2), one tie with the Huron-Perth Lakers and another loss against the Toronto Marlboros (4-1).  In the quarterfinals, the Jr Hounds matched up against the Sun Country Panthers, but ended up losing 3-1.  After the loss, the Jr Hounds had to regroup and prepare for the International Silver Stick just two weeks after.   The Jr Hounds once against qualified for the playoffs in the International Silver Stick with two wins over the Cumberland Jr Grads (5-0) and the Guelph Gryphons (3-2), one tie with the Oshawa Generals (2-2) and a loss against the Don Mills Flyers (5-2).  The quarterfinals saw the Jr Hounds win against a highly talented Quinte Red Devils (4-2).  The semi-final game was one of the most exciting games all year with an overtime victory against the London Jr Knights (4-3).  Only a couple hours later, the Jr Hounds met the Peterborough Petes in the finals.  Another exciting game with the Jr Hounds in the game right to the end until the Petes put two empty net goals to put the Jr Hounds on the wrong side of a 4-1 game.

Northern Ontario hockey stopped all game play in December due to the increasing COVID cases in the north and in January the whole Province of Ontario went into full lockdown.

Fortunately, the team was back on the ice in February preparing for the end of the season.  The Jr Hound won their remaining eight league games to finish an undefeated in league play.  In the NOHLAAA playoffs, the Jr Hound played strong through the round robin play winning all three games against the Sudbury Nickel Capitals (6-1), North Bay Trappers (10-0) and Nickel City Jr Sons (8-4).  The Jr Hounds finished the season with a convincing finals victory over the Sudbury Nickel Capitals (10-1), earning themselves the title of the NOHLAAA – U12AAA NOHA TOC Champions.

The players and staff want to thank parents, sponsors, and fans, for the support this season.  Wishing everyone a great off season!  See everyone in the fall!

Sincerely, U12AAA Soo Jr Greyhound Team
